I went to Montana expecting to have a fun time with old friends, enjoy some incredible scenery, and learn how to fly fish. I did not expect to have as phenomenal a time as I did. The location and accommodations were unsurpassed; the guides not only made the fly fishing experience easy and entertaining, but they turned out to be high quality, enjoyable people with whom to spend an afternoon on the water; and the opportunity to reconnect with old friends and renew familiar bonds was priceless.

Steve has fished with me since he was a young boy. From the seeds of our shared journey together, fly fishing has been the link that keeps us connected. There was a time when I was his earliest mentor as uncles often become. But, now Steve has become someone who now orchestrates soulful fly fishing experiences for others through his innovative company Fisher King Fly Fishing Journeys. As a grown man with two boys, he truly understands what a gift it is to enjoy fly fishing experiences with those he loves and who love him. Through his leadership each fly fishing adventure continues to stir, remarkable companionship, empathetic and playful banter, and, of course a fish or two – sometime steady and then sometimes exhilarating.  Often times, when the fishing is slower or challenging, this lends itself to surprising connection and fellowship. We’ve scheduled our 10th annual trip for February and I’m truly looking forward to it.

Steve invited me to join his family on a fly fishing trip many years ago because of my desire to improve my fly fishing skills and to see some beautiful country. Little did I know I would develop close bonds with men I’d only heard Steve talk fondly about. And to my amazement and delight, I ‘ve come to truly treasure the connections I’ve forged with Steve, his Uncle Gary, and older brother Kevin and now think of them as family. And yes, my fly fishing has improved dramatically – Steve’s a gifted and patient teacher. Surprisingly, I almost look forward more to the recounting of the shared experiences on the river at dinner at the end of each day, than to the actual fishing itself. It seems the connections made through the experiences on the river inevitably result with the sharing of many life stories. But most of all, it’s the laughter that keeps me returning to the experience, now in its seventh year. This trip is a catch, and results in a richly deserved release.
